Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

May 20, 2009

“Self-Protection beats Self-Defense”

Guest: Kristie Kilgore

Anchoring Points:

  1. My life was significantly influenced by a mentor and role model who gave unselfishly to the community.  I am a 20-year practitioner of three forms of martial arts, and certified as a scuba dive master, OSHA hazardous operations, health and safety expert, first responder/first-on-the-scene rescue, a mounted patrol posse member, instructor, horse trainer and volunteer.

  1. I also found meditation, including esoteric forms such as kuji kiri which is taught at Buddhist temples, to anchor me and pursued certification as a Reiki Master for healing arts.

  1. I suffered a disabling accident in 2003, shattering one foot and breaking the other.  The mental journey of recovery far outweighed the physical in confronting fears and limits, and accepting that some limits are what they are, and won’t change.  I had to change my frame of reference to not just cope, but shift towards possibilities and away from limitations.

  1. The best self-defense is a self-protection education that includes a prevention focus, situational training under stress, and weapons awareness.  Self-defense is what you do when your self-protection plan has failed.

  1. My experience and statistics show that carrying a concealed weapon can create a lethal situation not prevent one, if not trained for retention and use.  The reaction time of the mind to recognize and react to danger is less than a second.  While a weapon may be thought of as a deterrent, prosecution can result if you are viewed as provoking an altercation.

  1. Eyes Wide Open: Bodyguard Strategies for Self-Protection is my contribution to save lives and educate others on the difference between self defense and self protection. I am particularly committed to educating youth through awareness and staying/getting away from danger.  Today, nationwide one in five teenagers carries a weapon.

  1. Writing a book is a lot like having a child.  You both have lives of your own after, and you both grow up in the process.
