Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

April 8, 2009

“Advancing the Business of Business”

Guest: Debbie Chandler

Anchoring Points:

  1. The Tucson Microbusiness Advancement Center (www.mac-sa.org) fosters the development of micro entrepreneurs in Tucson and Southern Arizona, with over 600 people annually taking advantage of training, financing and mentorship.  Over 90% of all jobs in Arizona come from small businesses.

  1. For 20 years MAC has participated in the economic development of our region, through skills-based training programs taught by committed and knowledgeable instructors, supported by 70 volunteer mentors, several of whom were prior recipients of the organization’s outreach.

  1. MAC is part of a nationwide network of 114 non-profits providing business services especially to women entrepreneurs to promote self-sufficiency and level the playing field.

  1. Funders include federal grants through the Small Business Administration, private and community foundations which support local economic development, and corporate foundations such as Hewlett Packard, and financial institutions with community reinvestment dollars.

  1. Most small businesses harbor a weakness in financial management, capital management and cash flows.  These require skill and technology know how, along with access to seed capital through micro loans, which MAC is an intermediary provider of – from $500 to $3,500 – to help owners grow.

  1. MAC is positioned to receive US Government stimulus funding, distributed through our micro lender mechanisms and opening opportunities for building infrastructure and government contracting.  We are running a series of classes on procurement and registration to “get in the game.”

  1. We are actively involved in helping new local businesses expand their market footprint beyond greater Tucson, offering several of our classes in English and Spanish.  What a pleasure to hand out the certificates of completion and send our graduates on to a successful business future!
