Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

July 23, 2008

“Tucson at the Crossroads: Now What?”

Guest:  Jack Camper, President, Tucson Chamber of Commerce

Anchoring Points:

  1. I have enjoyed the longest Chamber of Commerce “leadership run” in the US – 30 years in Tucson ripe for personal growth at the same time of the almost unbridled growth of Tucson.

  1. The Chamber is 100% privately funded by its 2,000 members and a few revenue generating endeavors.  Over 95% of the members have less than 25 employees.  501c6 nonprofit with $1.8 million budget, 22 employees.

  1. While we are in a period of slowdown, endeavors for change continue:
    • Collaboration for largest “infill” project ever, between KB Homes, BIO5 and U of A
    • Davis Moffat Air Force Base ($1.5 of the 4.5 b economy here)
    • Component parts all building to the system perspective, such as the advances in Regional Transportation Planning and execution

  1. We are a big city, whether we want to be or not.  So, let’s deal with it.
    • Southern Arizona Leadership Council “Town Hall” to break down the Blueprint for Change to management pieces
    • Chamber’s focus with Volunteer Literacy on adult illiteracy to help employees of Chamber companies plus impact their children
    • We need conversation on restoring a second hospital trauma center.
    • Downtown metro rejuvenation is critical to attracting and retaining vibrant younger professionals for Tucson’s future.

  1. Southern Arizona Chamber of Commerce Alliance established for the nine area chambers to collaborate at the legislative level to impact decisions and resources.

The Chamber is dedicated to offering its members education and training to prepare them for the future, such as collaborating with Global Advantage and PIMA College on how to operate in the expanding global economy.
