Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

September 3, 2008

“My Energy for the Tucson Community”

Guest:  Steve Lynn, Vice President of Unisource, Tucson Electric Power

Anchoring Points:

1.  My career has been in three circles to date:

  • City of Tucson, both inwardly focused within the structure, and outwardly oriented in the Model City project through an understanding of neighborhoods
  • Advertising Agency work, including public relations and marketing
  • Leadership within a large utility, allowing me to bring everything I am into the role, including having started my career with TEP after college in a six month early career rotation program!

2.  I believe in giving back to the greater community and serving those in need:

  • TREO (Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities) Acting President to establish new structure and leadership succession
  • Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission, Chairman who along with four other peer members reapportions legislative districts per census data and understanding the voices of residents
  • Downtown Tucson Partnership, Chairman for private-public leader collaboration for the rejuvenation and expansion of downtown commerce and residential expansion – getting critical mass and striving for a tipping point to attract more secondary and tertiary enterprises to fuel a renaissance, entertainment and cultural fabric enhancement, young urban professionals as residents
  • Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board, modeled after successful North Carolina “Smart Start” program to enhance infant-through-age five life experience – quality child care including developmental experiences, health and safety, information for parents, 80% funds distributed from the State to 30 local councils

3.  I believe there is always time to do what you need and want to do – balancing

     home, work, and community.
