Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen
on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

June 11, 2008
“Run, Walk, Live: Partnering for Health and Well-Being”
Guests:  Jeanne and Pete Snell, Fleet Feet Sports of Tucson

  Anchoring Points:
  1. When one door closes, another one opens.  Downturns bring mixed blessings – addressing burnout and being frozen in place, knowing something else is out there and getting out and exploring possibilities.
  1. Our goals were to identify something we were passionate about, that would make a difference in Tucson, and would allow us to grow roots in the community.
  1. We selected Fleet Feet as a franchise because of their expectation that we would customize our store and get to know the local market.
  1. This isn’t as much about the products, as it is the relationship we strive to establish with our customers, partnered with our highly trained staff. Our #1 asset.
  • Our goal is to help others do what they want to do; to help anyone who wants to get moving, get moving. And keep moving.
  • We are committed to matching the customer’s needs with what we have to offer via a personalized shoe fit process, fine tuning the requirements, visually validating by 3-angle videotaping of the customer walking on a treadmill.
  • Or if we do not have the right product, we are committed to arming you with the right information about your feet – knowing what is going on – to find a solution.
  • Our techniques are backed by podiatry and sports physiology knowledge in practical application.
  • 95% of our customers are referred to us, many with injuries or chronic leg and foot pain; over 50% are not runners but fitness walkers, people who work on their feet all day long, individuals coping with aging and wanting to get moving again.
  • We are not medical professionals per se, but we understand a great deal about foot issues, and often pass on referrals to specialized care professionals.
  1. We give a lot of information to our customers, and are committed to teaching, including educating people on programs to make progress without getting injured and meet your “get moving, stay moving” goals.
  1. We focus on the foot system: the right shoe, the right inserts to provide sculpting, cushion, and support, and the right weight technical (non-cotton, wicking) socks.
  1.  Listen to your children and probe for what might be wrong bio-mechanically to cause them to avoid exercise or a specific sport they once enjoyed.  Aches in their knees, joints, heals, and feet could be due to their shoes, as opposed to (or in combination with) growing pains. We can help.
     8.   We treat people the way we want to be treated, and the thank you letters and emails of gratitude that we receive have been extraordinary. We know we are changing people's lives-and that's something to be very passionate about.
