Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

June 25, 2008

“Take Control; We Can Help”

Guest:  Sandi Moomey, Arthritis Foundation of Tucson

www.arthritis.org   (520) 917-7070

Anchoring Points:

  1. The Arthritis Foundation is celebrating 60 years in 2008, with the Tucson-based Southwest Chapter as the founder and largest contributor to $25 million annual support for research. We have 48 affiliates around the US committed to helping the 46 million doctor-diagnosed victims of the 120 varieties of arthritis.  There are an estimated 35 million additional people suffering.  In Arizona, we have 1.7 million people suffering; 1 out of every 3 people in Tucson suffers with arthritis.

  1. This is NOT an “old person’s disease”.  Arthritis does not discriminate by age.  We need to help people realize they can come forward and ask for help and let go of any preconceived stigma.  This is about chronic pain and immobility.  Attitude is often the biggest battle.

  1. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in America; 300,000 children have arthritis, which is more than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis combined.

  1. Osteoarthritis (joint wear and tear due to age, sports stress, injury, possibly genetics) is the most common form (21 million suffering), often diagnosed via x-ray.  Stiffness, pain, fever, ongoing flu symptoms can be signs of juvenile forms.

  1. Our foundation is dedicated to helping people take control of their lives.

·        Brochures, pamphlets, education and self-help programs (life improvement to keep people mobile and independent, relaxation techniques, exercises, diet and nutrition, weight control)

·        On-line resources, including self-evaluations (www.arthritis.org)

·        Advocacy to increase research funding and government support ($8 per person currently allocated, compared to $50 per person for diabetes)

·        Educational seminars and special support groups

·        Collaborations with sports centers to provide aqua and low-impact exercise programs; special certified instructors

  1. Medical treatments are both traditional (rheumatoid specialty) and holistic in approach: exercise, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, diet, and weight control.  800,000 joints are replaced annually in the US.

  1. We welcome volunteers to work in our office near Broadway and Craycroft in the Williams Center to help disseminate information and answer calls.  Many are arthritis victims reaching out to help others.  Upcoming special events include September 20th D’Vine Wine Extravagancy at Hilton El Conquistador, and December 6th Jingle Bell Run and Walk at Reid Park.

The battle is not won, it is still raging.  Please consider joining us work with and for people looking for a better life.  We share the same passionate goal to make a difference.  Take control; we can help.
