Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

July 23, 2008

“Skin Lasers: What’s Hot and What’s Not”

Guest:  Dr. Gerald Goldberg, PIMA Dermatology

www.pimaderm.com

Anchoring Points:

  1. We are a 24-year old full service, broad based dermatology practice dedicated to customer service, offering a full range of medical treatments, cosmetic services and products.  Our integrated team includes two doctors with extensive surgery and skin cancer experience, a physicians assistant, nurse practitioner, two aesthetic counseling professionals and front and back room staff.

  1. We focus on the A (avoid), B (block) and C’s (cover-up) preventative care of the skin.  There is a broad spectrum of products to shield from the sun’s rays that effect superficial damage and/or prompt deep, premature aging.

  1. Anyone with fair skin and light hair color is at risk.  For UV-B rays, use 30 or above sunscreens and be wary of any exposure between 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  UV-A rays happen early and late in the day, affecting skin aging.

  1. We offer over 25 modalities of laser treatment for the care of the skin, with my starting as a pediatric dermatologist treating wine-colored birthmarks (removing blood vessels) in infants to brown birthmarks, then tattoo removals, laser hair removals, and wrinkles and scare reduction via resurfacing, in additional to complex skin disease related surgeries.

  1. We are very proud of keeping abreast of and early adopting fully validated and verified new technology into our practice.

  1. Skin rejuvenation includes:
    • Prescription creams with Vitamin A, Retin A (80’s and 90’s) evening use
    • Collagen remodeling, skin texture glycolics, anti-oxidants (Note: global cosmeceuticals are not regulated through medical efficacy/FDA testing, so we need to sort through the “hype and the hope”)
    • Office procedure chemical peels and microdermabrasion
    • Contemporary non-oblative laser treatments to mitigate patient downtime
    • Fractional Technology lasers for “selective injury” of the skin to promote new collagen growth and fast healing/sealing of vessels
    • Derm fillers and botox for dynamic wrinkles

  1. Dermatology as a career field has opened up and attracted cross-over medical professionals from other specialties, and like most areas of medicine, to play to individuals’ strengths (i.e. visual skills, hand dexterity in surgery, etc.)

  1. Our practice has changed from a two-doctor partnership to a blended professional staff that can more broadly service our customers, and provide layered expert care.

I bring my personal interest and passion for photography into developing my visual and surgical skills to the next level, as well as to document pre and post conditions of our patients.  And decorate our offices!
